laura neiman & angie frost are starting up their own styling company catering specifically to engaged couples. don't know what to wear during your engagement session? not sure which bridal salons in austin have dresses that fit your taste? no problem. they will accompany you to stores and boutiques around austin and help you find outfits that fit you, feel comfortable and photograph perfectly. laura is also a part of clearly classy events, and can help you one step further in planning your wedding. these two ladies hired me to photograph them during the process of styling a session, from concept to execution, for their website which will launch in the near future.

we began the day with a cup of coffee from jo's, and walked across the street to get some clothing ideas from the cute austin boutique, miss behave. i know not having the pressure of picking out outfits for the engagement session, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, and wedding day (not to mention all the accessories) would take a HUGE weight off my shoulders. plus, i'll then know that i'll be camera ready and comfortable the entire wedding weekend. it's definitely worth it. good luck ladies!

as you can see, i've been shooting a ton of boudoir sessions over the winter. lucky for me, i live in texas where the winters don't really count, and cold here is considered t-shirt weather back on the east coast. you could say i'm really getting used to having 3 seasons of amazing, shoot friendly weather.
boudoir is quite possibly my favorite thing to shoot, and i've been fortunate enough to have clients here who are also really into it, and who allow me to get creative with choice of wardrobe, location and concept. i have been taking full advantage of the field and creek located directly behind my apartment, in fact my entire apartment complex has become my go to boudoir location.

i really love how many woman are responding to this type of portrait session, and who are also responding in a super positive way about how they feel about themselves, especially after seeing how amazing they look in underoos and oversized sweaters.

ultimately, this post is a challenge to myself. i've always believed that women are hands down the best subject to photograph, and i would like to shoot on average one boudoir session a week in 2012. crazy right? probably. it's january 9th, and i've shot one. i'm doing another on my birthday (january 11th), and i'm in the process of scheduling another the following week. i do have some scattered here and there with brides who have already booked me for their weddings which is super awesome. but i'll definitely need more. so here's the incentive:

if you are the first to contact me about doing a boudoir session on a week when i don't have one scheduled, you'll get it for HALF OFF. no joke. i'll do my best to make time in every week of 2012, and it will be first come first serve. want to book 7 months in advance to secure your week? no prob. i'm cool.

ONE MORE THING! i travel a lot. and this year i have weddings in Belize, Phoenix, Virginia, Illinois, Jacksonville Florida, Lake Tahoe and potentially Mexico. i always add locations to my schedule, and if i have enough requests in one city (like if you and all of your friends want to book me for one week) i'll make a trip out just for you. if you miss your chance in 2012, i may run something else bad ass in 2013, but there's no guarantee...

my 2012 wish list

so, i had an idea. i would like to shoot more weddings with non-traditional elements in 2012. i'm going to some pretty amazing destinations this year (belize, lake tahoe, virgina, arizona, illinois, and of course some beautiful locations here in texas), so i can check that off my list. but i'm dying to shoot a black wedding dress, or a wedding dress any color but white. or a venue so awesome i'm speechless when i walk in. or DIY wedding details that have meaning to you and your family. don't get me wrong, i have nothing against a more traditional event, or a white dress. i'm just feelin' that urge that artists sometimes feel to be absolutely and utterly surprised.

and here's my idea. in order to shoot more weddings like this, i'm offering a whopping 25% off the final package investment for any outrageous wedding elements.

for example:

-a black, blue, red, silver, (you get the picture) wedding dress
-a white, silver, blue, patterned (etc..) suit for the groom
-any artificial hair color, ie. nothin' your mama can pass down.. bonus points for pinks and purples!!
-a crazy, outrageous, or just plain bad-ass theme.. bonus points for incorporating bones ☠
-any DIY details i've never seen before
-a couple that will trust me enough to let me do WHATEVER i want on their wedding day.. i promise it's not as scary as it sounds

kelly and gus's wedding was awesome for several reasons, here are 4:

1. it was on thanksgiving weekend. if i couldn't be with family during the holiday, at least i got to spend it with good people at a good party
2. several of those good people are friends and past clients; milo + erika, who's laid back costa rican wedding i just shot a few weeks ago, and pablo + delsy, who had a fall themed miami wedding two years ago. (not to mention all the friends of friends i've met in their group, who say "oh, that's why i recognize you!")
3. the party just kept..on..going.. kelly works in politics and had some familiar faces shakin' it all night, one in particular was miami's former mayor, manny diaz. i don't often stay to the very end of a wedding, but i'm glad i did because some of my favorite reception shots happened in the last 10 minutes.
4. kelly and gus were genuine from the very beginning. kelly, i'm sure you know this, but you've got some big fans who are hoping you someday run for mayor.. i say do it!!

my friend milo fernandez is engaged to erika huerta, and i'm photographing their wedding in costa rica in november. i'm super pumped because:

1. i've known milo for 5 years - he's smart, ambitious and has always been a good friend. i can't wait to see him get hitched =)
2. erika is the sweetest person alive, but more importantly, she's a bad ass. she is one of the stars of the Police Women of Broward County, and you can read about her on TLC here.
3. because cadence is shooting the wedding with me, and if we lived in the same city we'd probz be joined at the hip, (not to mention the fact that her husband eli and puppy are pretty amazing as well).

i had my first anniversary session here in Austin this past weekend and it was perfect. hair and makeup were done at my place with wine, champagne and snacks. we started shooting in the field behind my apartment, headed to the spider house for drinks and appetizers, then finished up the night by grabbing a few shots on Lavaca and 2nd and the W hotel.

a few things i like about keva + anthony:
- they like to dance to I'm Bossy in the middle of the street
- they like southern food as much if not more than me (including corn pudding, carolina BBQ and black eyed peas)
- they knew exactly what to do when i said "stand here and look like a bad ass.."

foodie friday 2 - coconut + lime chicken fricasee

this weeks foodie friday was an asian inspired comfort chicken dish; coconut + lime chicken fricasee with roasted garlic, mustard greens and sweet potato. it's an easy to make one dish meal, and even though we cleaned our plates we weren't stuffed like a turkey on thanksgiving afterwards.

INGREDIENTS:
1 whole chicken
1 bunch mustard greens
1 large sweet potato
2 heads of garlic
3 T soy sauce
2 T sesame oil
1 good squirt of agave nectar
4 limes (zest and juice)
2 serrano peppers
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 bunch cilantro (stems for marinade, leaves for garnish)
1 can coconut milk
1 medium sized fresh ginger root (brunoise = very finely chopped)
1/2 cup sambal
peanuts eyeball for garnish

preheat oven to 325. since matt is all good at cooking and what not, he took the whole chicken and chopped it into 8 parts: legs, wings, thighs and breasts. if the idea of taking a chicken apart seems scary, or you want to go healthier, feel free to buy whatever parts you want already chopped from the store. put all these parts into a large mixing bowl. then put soy sauce, sesame oil, agave nectar, limes, serranos, peanut butter, cilantro stems, coconut milk, ginger, and sambal into the same bowl as the chicken and mix by hand (this part is gooey, but is the most efficient way to infuse those chicken parts with all the goodness). let this sit for 20 minutes.

chop the tip of the garlic head off to reveal the cloves (but not in the middle or else the head will fall apart) and place face down in a pan with olive oil and salt on high heat to brown the exposed garlic. set aside.

in a standard sized baking dish, drizzle olive oil enough to coat the bottom. place the sweet potatoes down and season with salt and pepper, then the mustard greens also with salt and pepper. drain the marinade from the chicken into a pot on the stove and simmer to create the sauce. place the chicken parts neatly on top of the greens and season with salt and pepper.

place the chicken and garlic into the oven on 325 for approx. 45 minutes. remove the garlic and put the oven on broil to brown the chicken for 3-4 minutes. remove, plate and garnish with crushed peanuts and cilantro leaves. et voila!

foodie friday, post I - shrimp scampi

my boyfriend is a chef, and despite having crazy hours and working 14 hour days 4 days a week, he likes to cook for me. seriously.
we're both a little obsessed with food, and have decided to make an amazing meal at home at least once a week instead of spending money on going out and eating food that isn't as good. he is trained in Italian, French and Mexican cuisine, and has blown me away with meals like boeuf bourguignon, wild mushroom truffle pizza, and crème brûlée.
food is a pretty huge part of my life, so it's now going to be a big part of this blog. come back every saturday for pictures, recipes, wine suggestions, and who knows what else.
this weeks foodie friday was shrimp scampi, one of my favorite meals. so simple and ridiculously delicious. enjoy!

words from the bride, sarah:

"-venue: the trolley barn.
-flowers: primarily Denton Farms.
-bottles: my mom got most of hers from secondhand stores, lots of mine i picked up from the side of the road. we used coke bottles because of the 'southern' theme, and coca cola is based in atlanta.
-inspiration for invitations: the theme was "southern wedding" because most of our guests were from out of town, so i chose some iconic 'southern' botanics, peaches and magnolias.
-napkins were the favor, and i designed the pattern. we half picked them because we thought that a functional gift was much more ecologically friendly, and also, we did the napkin waving dance called 'a second line'. we knew people would do that... (as shown in the reception shots)
-caterers: avalon catering. we chose them half because the food was kickass, half because we were trying to be 'sustainable', and out of the caterers they had the best green practices.
-hair: melange salon."

sarah is an artist, and makes invitations and calligraphy for invite envelopes (among tons of other things). check out her work here and here. below is her artist statement:

The color and forms that occur not by the hands of man, but by the simple acts of growth
and life endlessly inspire me. A lifetime could be spent trying to exhaust nature’s catalog
of inspiration. I studied textile design in college. With that knowledge, and the additional education that
has come from working in an industry job, I have realized the importance of color. It has taught me that, in
addition to emotion being evoked with the correct choice of color, many purchases are
also made based fully on color. Seeing that color defines, whether looking at it from the
eye of an artist, or a corporate designer, I am a believer in its significance. In my work,
you will find multiple fresh, bright colors. In the physical work, I love to use a worn or repurposed base
for these colors. The desaturations of age are such an inviting canvas for vibrant color combinations.

part I of my "life makeover" in the works... i am FINALLY updating this blog's design. i do have a custom blog in development, but for now, this is it.. and i was sick of looking at it. you'll be seeing more and more upgrades to my branding in the next few months, and this is all possible because i hired 3 interns. seriously, 3. and they have been amazing so far!! i'll be making some introductions soon, but for now they will remain behind the scenes helping me organize my uprooted life and keeping me grounded, positive and motivated.

next up are some BIG, fat, overdue thank you's:

first and foremost - Jason Groupp. i can't thank you enough for everything you taught me the last 4 years. i wouldn't be here in Austin today if i hadn't decided to work for a wedding photographer part time for some extra cash while i "work on my fashion portfolio..." in fact, i have no idea where i'd be.

second and with love - matt. you have been more than supportive and understanding of my "business start-up panic attacks" than i deserve. there have been way too many times where my head is so clogged from well, everything, that i literally forget things you've told me 5 seconds prior. you are patient, sincere and drama free and i can't express how often you remind me to stay grounded. i made the best decision of my life moving to Austin, TX and look forward to many more late night outburst dance parties and Andre balcony Bowie bonfires.

third - Dave and Quin Cheung. i had the honor of attending the Ying Yang Workshop 4 last year. i knew leaving NYC and the relationships i had would be difficult, that i would be on my own starting a business in a market where i don't know any other photographers or vendors. but after a 2 hour conversation over pizza, they helped me reach the clarity i needed to finally realize i was ready to make the leap. besides the amazing information included in the workshop itself, i was struck by their passion for what they do and who they are, and had my "ah-hah" moment. it wasn't about the day to day crap that makes running your own business seem crazy, it's the time they spend with their kids, and the way they actually impact other peoples lives. it hit home in a very real way because the reason i stayed in wedding photography in the first place was that i could help preserve people's memories forever. i'm not so sure if i will ever be able to pin point the pivotal moment, but i can without a doubt say that the timing of the workshop was precise. Dave and Quin, i will always be grateful to you for helping me feel comfortable when i was vulnerable, and for your completely unbiased advice.

lastly - my friends and family. i left several of my best friends when i moved, and the luxury of a 4 hour bus ride to my parents house in Virginia. i was sad to go, and i know they were sad to see me go, but throughout the last 6 months in nyc no one ever made me feel guilty. when i announced i was leaving i never once swayed from my decision, partly because i knew it was the right thing for me, but also because everyone i care about encouraged me. i will never forget that.

and here's an image of one HUGE reason i'm so excited to be here, my niece (and her parents of course). i didn't always look twice at babies, and sometimes i still don't, but now that there's a baby related to me - i get it.

austin baby photography - river's first gymboree class

river turned 13 months a few days ago, and had her first Gymboree class here in Austin. she was so fearless it scared me. i kept picturing bloody noses, broken toes and forehead boo boo's but all river saw were mountains and bright colors and other small creatures with wide eyes and bare feet. river is most definitely the smartest baby ever born, no question. completely smitten with my niece is one way of wording it.

Hi friends!!!

As most of you know I'm working on moving my business from NYC to Austin, TX and this means connecting with new vendors and getting the word out here in Austin. I've decided to connect myself with The Knot and Wedding Wire to jump start this process, and lot's of potential brides like to see what working with me is really like. melissa and joe are the definition of good people. she came to me looking for artistic wedding photography, and right away i knew this wedding would be the kind of wedding that challenges me to really push myself and get better. everything came together; the venue, the bridal party, the details.. and created this beautifully simple and elegant affair. every wedding i shoot gives me something different to work with, and it's the positive vibe melissa, joe and their friends and family had that really made this day perfect. there's nothing more rewarding than shooting for people who appreciate the art of what i'm doing, and give me the creative freedom to try something like - "ok bridal party, i want you to work your way into the chairs and randomly place yourselves.. just be careful for seats that may give out!!"

i've had the privilege of photographing the Design on a Dime Benefit two years in a row. it's an event held to raise money for homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. designers, celebrities and other artists create silhouettes of rooms that people can buy and the profit goes to helping find the cure. i love getting to shoot for people who care enough to make a difference. these are a few of my favorite shots from the event. enjoy! ♡

so, as you've noticed, i'm not much of a writer. well scratch that - i love writing, i just never do it. with all of the things in my life i've prioritized; family, love, personal life, photography, business (i do my best to keep those two separate) and sanity, i've surfaced from a really long underwater somersault and found my priorities all mixed up.

i'm in the process of getting a makeover. for all intents and purposes, let's say a "life makeover". even though i just jazzed up this blog, it will be gone soon. i'm getting a new logo, a new website, a new hair cut (soon hopefully, my split ends are laughing at me), and a new home. that's right folks, i'm leaving new york city. by the time i leave i will have been here for 4 years. has it really been that long?

there are many reasons i'm leaving this amazing place, most of which i won't address here. but i've got a pretty stellar line up for reasons number 1, 2, + 3.

number 1 - my boyfriend. as i watch these letters appear on the screen in front of me i can't believe they're actually true. i was that girl. you know, the one who would NEVER move for a boy. say it with me, "never say never!" well here's another, i never understood why people did it. why people picked up their lives and literally transplanted themselves, like a plastic house on a monopoly board, for someone else. now i do.

number 2 - my sister. jen is 7 years older than me, married with a newborn baby girl and living in mexico. my sister and i haven't lived in the same city since i was 11. i'm 26 now. i miss her, i love her husband and now she has a baby who's cheeks i want to pinch, tummy i want to tickle and rather large feet i want to oogle. and here's the clincher; my boyfriend matt is jennifers husband's brother. ...1....2....3.....WWWWWHAT? yep. my life, the movie.

number 3 - the rest of the world. i know this is a rather broad reason i've chosen as #3, but think about it. new york city is an island jam packed with people surrounded by more neighborhoods jam packed with more people. there is so much to do here, so much to see, so many people, sometimes i can't see the forest through the trees. which brings me to my next point. trees. i love them, and rivers, and stars, and fresh air, and long dark highways that connect smaller neighborhoods that aren't as jam packed with people. i've always felt an urge to travel. i've lived my entire life on the east coast, and loved every freakishly humid and absurdly snowy minute of it. but it's time for a change. life is short. i want to drive again.

so where am i going? austin, texas. i'm moving in june 2011. matt and his sister diana currently live there, jen david and river (best baby name ever) are moving there this summer, it's the ultimate sibling mash up. we should start a band.

not so minor side note, i'll be starting my own photography business in austin, hence the new logo and site. making this decision was not a light one, but it was maybe the easiest one i've ever made. i felt i had lost touch with the things that really matter most to me, and a few things that i never planned on factoring in. now i'm just balancing the time i have left between enjoying watching nyc go from winter to spring, and lining up my ducks so i'm ready to go come june.

this is to be the 1st long blog post, in a long line of long blog posts to come. i will post mostly photos, so don't worry. i won't blab too much. and in the spirit of texas, ya'll come back now ya hear?
